Fitting holes and openings in leather hard clay

Here is a tip for fitting ready-made accessories like plugs, oil spouts, corks and more in clay. Buy the cheapest set of woodworking spade bits and use them to make holes in slabs of leather hard clay. Mark each hole with the size but I used. Fire the slab to maturity. Now use the gauge to figure out the size hole or opening needed to fit an accessory. When your bottle or other piece is leather hard, use the appropriate spade bit to refine your opening or hole. It isn’t always perfect but better than guessing. Also, you might need to make separate gauges for each clay since they vary in shrinkage.

Happy Potting!
